What Is Geothermal Energy?

Geothermal energy, quite simply, is heat from the ground. But there are two different types of geothermal energy. Heat that comes up from the earths core and heat that is stored in the geothermal heat sourceearths crust from the sun. The difference being that the heat stored in the earths crust is much more accesible and much more economic when it comes to heating or cooling residential and commercial buildings. The heat or geothermal energy that rises up from the earths core is many thousands of feet underground, but heat from the sun, the greatest source of geothermal energy (as shown on the left ), is stored in the earths surface. This surface energy is perfectly placed right under your home and can be accessed in various ways. As the earth stores this energy and keeps a relatively constant temperature it can be used to heat and even cool any residential or commercial building.

"47% of the suns energy that reaches earth
is absorbed by the earths surface. That's 500
times more than mankind needs each year!"
